What is Accelerated Reader?
Accelerated Reader (AR) is really effective software used to monitor reading. It enables learners of all abilities to improve their reading and comprehension skills by guiding them to books at an appropriate level for them. Learners take regular STAR tests, in school, to establish their STAR reading level; this test also gives them a reading age. Children then read books within this level – AR books are organised by reading level in our library.
Learners take a quiz on the website after reading each book to assess how well they have understood it. AR gives both learners and teachers feedback based on the quiz results which the teacher then uses to help the child set targets and ongoing reading practice.
We want everyone to love reading so we also encourage our learners to visit the library and read other books alongside accelerated reader book. To motivate learners to read more, we award these stunning gold 'Million Word' badges to learners who read 1,000,000 words on Accelerated Reader.
Which Books Can the Children Read?
The document below lists all the books in each band on Accelerated Reader. This could be useful when choosing which books to borrow from your local library or thinking about books to choose as gifts, as you could select books which are already on the system. Then your child could do the quiz for this book and earn more points!
